T-shirt Quilts, Gallery Style by Leslie Morgan

Leslie Morgan, T-shirt Quilt Teacher

Leslie Morgan is a retired high school music teacher, having served 30 years with the Hamilton Board, where she spent a good portion of her career at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. Around the same time, she started teaching in 1987; Leslie discovered log cabin quilts and made so many that everyone she knew got one! She moved on to Rail Fence, Ohio Star, Radiant Star, Dresden Plate and New York Beauty, to name a few patterns.

About 10 years ago, Leslie started making memory quilts for friends who either wanted baby clothes incorporated into a keepsake, or for a remembrance of family members who had passed. Leslie retired from teaching in 2015 and started her quilting and long arm business, Sable Quilting Studio. She started noticing that the graphics and artwork on some shirts were really intriguing and she thought, ”Wow! A collection of these would make great quilts!” Leslie made herself an O Canada quilt using thrift store t-shirts and co-ordinating fabrics.  With a little research, many trips to thrift stores and t-shirt sales, Leslie has made over 75 Pop Culture quilts featuring themes such as the Beatles, Jurassic Park, Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters, the Blue Jays, the Maple Leafs, Star Wars and Canada’s 150th. She has a long list of themed quilts still to make, over 400 t-shirt graphics in stock and plans to make as many as possible to satisfy that creative itch.

Leslie will share her passion for pop culture t-shirt quilts at our February Guild meeting with a PowerPoint presentation, showing pictures of her memory and themed quilts, as well as some of the ones she still has on hand. She will explain about the process of choosing good graphics, preparing shirts, and doing a layout for a gallery, or  ”photo wall” collection. The workshop, which will take place the following day, will be fast paced, in order to cover the assembly of a t-shirt quilt top and information for trouble shooting. Information for pre-class prep has already been sent, and it is recommended that all class members do their homework to save valuable time!

If you have clothing from a family member commemorating their life journey, university or college days, love of music or favourite cartoons, you could enjoy creating a quilt that can be a fantastic source of memories, a fun conversation piece, and a source of comfort that can be used everyday.
